Got petroleum jelly? This could be a lip balm, neosporin, etc.
Got steel wool? A cotton ball? Any fibers handy, or bark peelings you can ball up? Take the wad and coat it with the petroleum gel.
Arrange kindling over and around the ball, then prop larger sticks over the kindling. Light the ball -- it will burn for quite a while, and even in wet weather. Once the sticks are lit, add your heavier wood.

Greening this technique
Anyone know quick methods for expressing volatile oils from plant matter in the wild? This way you might avoid using petroleum. Woody 17:43, 27 March 2007 (PDT)
